Several years ago, I walked through a season where nothing seemed to be going the right way. This season didn’t last for just a month, or a few months, or a year. It seemed to stretch on and on and on for several years. Finally, I got to the point where I didn’t know if I could continue moving down the path I felt God had placed me on. I really wanted to quit. If you have ever been there, you know it’s not a fun place to be. Well, feeling on the brink of giving up, I reached out to a friend for encouragement and didn’t find it. I reached out to a mentor, and I got the opposite of what I needed. Finally, I cried out to God. For one week, every day, I prayed, “God, I need some encouragement! I’m not going to make it to the finish line with out it!!” I was gut level honest. It’s like I always say, he already knows what we’re thinking, so we might as well talk to him about it! Well, I did tell him, and He was silent on day 1, silent on day 2, day 3, day4… Each day He was silent, until something amazing happened the following Sunday at church. I was in line as a prayer partner and a woman I’ve never seen before, or since, came up and stood between me and the prayer partner beside me – facing us. She just stood there, just about a foot away diagonally in front of me, looking quite pleasant. Thinking it was unusual that she didn’t come all the way to me or the person beside me, since we were both open; I leaned over, touched her hand and said, “Mam, can I pray for you?” She then turned her head slowly to look at me, stepped my way and said, “I am here to pray for you, for encouragement.” She then prayed the most in my business; spot on prayer of encouragement I’ve ever heard. Because she didn’t know me, nor I her, I knew it was God’s way of speaking to me in that moment. And, it was powerful. I left knowing God cared, and that He was tuned in to me. I was so relieved to have him meet me in my place of need.
Through out my life, God has spoken to me in a variety of ways; through the Bible, His still small voice, or through other people. Whatever the form it comes in, I’ve always been grateful for God’s loving words and guidance, because my heart’s desire is to be in tune and in step with his will for my life. Proverbs 3:6 says, “Listen for God’s voice in everything you do, everywhere you go; he’s the one who will keep you on track.”
The truth is God is always tuned in to our needs. He loves us. He is our biggest cheerleader. And he wants us to live in victory; free from hurts, habits and hang ups that can hold us back. He wants to encourage us, fill us and guide us. And when we tune in to him, we find all we need to keep going, to keep growing, and to keep moving forward.
